Rotations & Electives

Anesthesia

The Anesthesia rotation provides exposure to the principles of anesthesia. The training experience includes direct participation in evaluation and management of the anesthesia patient in the peri-operative setting.

Behavioral Sciences

The resident will be exposed to training experiences that shall include, but not be limited to diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders with an emphasis on social concerns.  The resident will be exposed to techniques in improving patient communication skills in individuals with psychosocial concerns.

Emergency Medicine

The Emergency Medicine rotation exposes the podiatric resident to emergency medicine management in an acute care setting. The training experience includes observation/direct management of emergency medical cases.

Family Medicine

Podiatric residents are exposed to a variety of medical pathology in a primary care setting. This rotation will include direct participation in an outpatient clinic setting. Residents will be exposed to training experience that shall include, treatment of patients with endocrine, rheumatologic, dermatological, respiratory, and vascular pathologies, in addition to common Family Medicine problems.

General/Vascular Surgery

The goal of the General Surgery rotation is to provide exposure to the treatment of pathology in non-podiatric surgical cases. The training experience includes direct participation in evaluation and management of a variety of available surgical disciplines that include general, orthopedic, vascular, and plastic surgery.

Infectious Disease

The Infectious Disease rotation exposes resident to management of patients with complex infectious disease processes. The training experience is held in both hospital and outpatient clinic and involves direct participation in daily rounds with emphasis on case management. The podiatric resident is dedicated to this two-week module and is responsible to call at the discretion of the attending physician.

Internal Medicine

The goal of the Internal Medicine rotation is to expose the podiatric resident to hospital management of general medical pathology. The training experience includes performing complete histories, physical examinations, and case management.

Global Health Track

The Global Health Track rotation is an elective available to second & third year podiatric residents. GHT contains three main components: an evening Seminar series, a noon conference series, and an Elective Field experience (or course work devoted to global health lasting two to four weeks). The field experience is a supervised clinical training experience in a foreign or domestic setting with an underserved population.  Alternatively, the resident may choose to attend a course with an emphasis on tropical disease and global health. Financial assistance is provided for the Field Experience or course work.  In order to qualify for financial assistance the resident must participate in activities of the GHT from the start of the first year and meet all requirements. The resident must involve the Director from the onset to assist with the program and the planning of the field experience. Duration of this experience, location, and time the rotation can be taken are at the discretion of the Director.

Medical Imaging

The goal of the Medical Imaging rotation is to expose the podiatric resident to various applications and indications of radiographic techniques to assess the status of podiatric patients.

Orthopedic Surgery

The Orthopedic Surgery rotation exposes residents to the treatment of pathology in non-podiatric surgical cases. The training experience includes direct participation in evaluation and management of a variety of available surgical disciplines that include general, orthopedic, vascular, and plastic surgery.

Pathology

The goal of the Pathology rotation is to expose the podiatric resident to pathology techniques used to identify soft tissue and bone pathology, and identify the clinical implication of lesions diagnosed. The training experience includes direct participation in anatomic pathology with slide review emphasizing bone and soft tissue pathology of the lower extremity. The experience also includes exposure to the working pathology laboratory emphasizing microbiology and diagnostic testing.

Physical Therapy

The Physical Therapy rotation provides a diversity of exposure and training experiences in rehabilitating lower extremity injuries and disease. Residents will have direct participation in diagnosis and therapeutic management with an emphasis on regaining appropriate lower extremity function.

Podiatry Clinic

The goal of the Podiatry Clinic rotation is to provide a diversity of training experiences in podiatric pathology, with emphasis on non-surgical intervention, preventative medicine, and patient education. The rotation includes direct resident participation in the diagnosis and treatment with holistic interdisciplinary approach.

Podiatric Surgery

The Podiatric Surgery rotation provides diversity of operative cases, techniques and procedures on the foot and ankle. Residents will develop the skills and judgment to perform pre-operative care to patients requiring podiatric foot and reconstructive rear foot and ankle surgery.

Research Paper

Podiatric residents will be directed through a methodical protocol to create research questions in podiatric-related areas. A research proposal will be designed that defines the research problem, literature review, research design, methodology, and conclusions.

Rheumatology

The Rheumatology rotation exposes podiatric residents to a variety of rheumatological pathologies in an office setting. The training experience includes direct participation in diagnosis and management of patients with rheumatological disease.

Wound Care Clinic

The goal of the Wound Care Clinic rotation is to expose residents to lower extremity wound assessment and management in a multi-disciplinary setting. Residents will be directed in developing wound care protocols and participate in continuity of care.
