Geriatrics
This is a three-year longitudinal experience, encompassing acute inpatient and outpatient care, nursing home rounds, and home visits. The curriculum seeks to teach residents comprehensive, cost effective, and compassionate care of geriatric patients in the hospital, nursing home, and outpatient settings. Approximately 10% of the patients seen in the Family Medicine Center for ambulatory care are geriatric patients. The resident will follow the patient for up to three years and learn to provide quality care for acute and chronic medical problems as well as disease prevention and health maintenance. During their second and third years, residents incorporate nursing home patients into their patient population and make regular visits to provide care. A one-block required rotation during the third year provides additional training in hospice, advanced directive planning, wound care, and end-of-life care. Residents are able to shadow Saint Joseph Visiting Nurses on home visits and experience Saint Joseph's PACE program for seniors.
