Nurse Charles Shumba - COVID-19 Saint Joe Superstars
Saint Joseph Health System is called to care for our entire community, but our dedicated staff colleagues couldn’t do it without your help. One of those colleagues is Charles Shumba, a registered nurse in the Progressive Care Unit. The wife of a patient Charles cared for described her husband’s connection to Charles and it shows the kind of compassionate, effective patient care your contributions support.
My husband, Steve, was a COVID patient at Saint Joseph Health System from Nov. 30 until Dec. 19, 2020. During that time, his oxygen need was over 50L, his kidneys shut down and he was on dialysis three times a week. It was a tough time for all of us. Miraculously he survived, thanks to some very dedicated nurses and doctors!
One of those especially caring and dedicated nurses was Charles Shumba. My husband has forgotten much of what he went through, but Charles stands out in his mind. Steve remembers that Charles would come in and pray with him before any medication was administered. He remembers his kind words at a very critical time. (He also remembers his large hands.) My husband would like to let Charles know that his caring and extra time spent will never be forgotten! The whole family wants to thank him from the bottom of our hearts. My husband says, “Please keep praying.”
