As one of the few Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) in Northern Indiana, we are ready to care for your newborn baby’s every need. Individual rooms are available to provide your family the utmost safety and privacy. While here, know that our team of experts will care for your newborn throughout their time here.
We’re privileged to care for people during some of the most significant moments of their lives. Because we know this is an extremely important time in your infant’s life, our compassionate and supportive team will make every effort for your family to bond with your baby, each and every day.
Our care team includes:
- Board-certified Neonatologists who are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week
- Neonatal nurse practitioners
- Nurses with expertise in neonatal care
- Respiratory therapists
- Lactation consultants
- Case manager
Emphasis on privacy
Private rooms are available in our NICU to give each family more space and privacy during visits. Each room can also accommodate twins, so newborns can remain together in most situations.
Visiting hours
Parents and grandparents are welcomed and encouraged in the NICU 24 hours a day. Your baby’s care team can provide information about additional visitors.
Security
Our NICU is a locked unit, which means that all visitors must obtain staff permission to enter. In addition, identification (ID) bracelets are placed on baby, mom, dad and/or the support person for the entire length of your infant’s stay. The Hugs® Infant Protection System ensures safety and security for babies and new moms.
Family Sleep Rooms
These rooms are reserved on a 24-hour basis and are available to recently discharged mothers or parents who need rest but want to stay close to their baby. Priority is given to those with critically ill infants or families that live out of town.
NICU Newborn Transport Ambulance
If your newborn baby needs extra care and more advanced medical treatment, our team can transport your child to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at our Mishawaka Medical Center. The NICU Newborn Transport Ambulance is designed to provide at-risk babies transportation from area hospitals, birthing centers and homes to the Level III NICU at Mishawaka Medical Center. During all newborn transports, a highly specialized team accompanies the babies needing extra care, including a neonatologist or nurse practitioner, a NICU nurse and a respiratory therapist.
