Why choose robotic-assisted hernia repair?
Robotic-assisted surgery is less invasive than traditional open surgery, with much smaller incisions. Possible benefits include:
- Decreased rate of hernias returning
- Shorter hospital stays
- Fewer complications
- Less blood loss
- Reduced need for narcotic pain medicine
- Faster recoveries
- Minimal scarring
The pain and swelling from a hernia can make it tough to handle even normal activities, but you can find relief and get back to doing the things you love. Robotic-assisted hernia repair with the da Vinci Surgical System at Saint Joseph Health System may result in less pain and quicker recovery than traditional laparoscopic and open surgeries.
What causes a hernia?
A hernia occurs when tissue pushes through an opening in your abdominal wall or groin area. Types of hernias include inguinal (inner groin), incisional (resulting from an incision), femoral (outer groin), umbilical (belly button) and hiatal (upper stomach). They are caused by lifting, coughing or anything that creates pressure in the abdomen.
Hernias may be painful and people of all ages can develop them. Symptoms include pain, a bulge and/or swelling in the abdomen or groin area. Pain may be dull or not present at all. Hernias should be repaired to prevent the risk of bowel strangulation, which is a surgical emergency.
