Bone Density Scan
Identifying osteoporosis
Osteoporosis, the softening of the bones, can cause bones to become weak and break more easily. Osteopenia is an early stage of osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis and osteopenia can occur as a result of natural aging, post-menopausal estrogen deficiency, and secondary conditions that adversely impact bone metabolism; it can also sometimes even be traced to childhood.
A bone density test, or Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorption (DEXA) exam, can diagnose osteoporosis and osteopenia, and estimate the density of bones and the risk of breaking a bone. A bone density test is fast, inexpensive and requires no prior preparation. Clothing does not need to be removed during a DEXA scan.
The Paqui and Brian Kelly Comprehensive Breast Center generally recommends a bone density test for women over 65 as well as younger postmenopausal women with risk factors for osteoporosis. Ask your physician if you should get a DEXA scan.
