If you live alone, being able to telephone a friend every day could mean a lot to you. That’s the purpose of the Saint Joseph Health System Telecare Program.

Telecare was established in December 1968 by Helen Liss, President of the Hospital Auxiliary. The free telephone reassurance service is sponsored daily (Monday through Saturday) by the Saint Joseph Health System Auxiliary and supported by Mishawaka Medical Center.

A sense of security

The purpose of Telecare is to provide you with an assured daily communication from someone outside the home to:

  • Calm your fears.
  • Detect emergency situations and take action.
  • Ensure security of a daily contact from someone who cares.
  • Create a bright spot for shut-ins by friendly, cheerful reassurance.
  • Discover needs for other services.

Participants of Telecare are appreciative of this service and say, “Hearing a cheery voice is the best part of my day.”

How it works

  • A volunteer is at the Telecare desk in the Volunteer Services office each day from 8:30 – 11 am.
  • You can decide either to call Telecare to report in or have the volunteer call you.
  • If you forget to call, we will call you. If there is no answer, the references listed on your application will be called. That is why it is so important to give us a daytime telephone number for your references. If there still is no answer, your community police department will discreetly try to locate you.

Please remember

  • Call 574.335.1130, 8:30 – 11 am, Monday through Saturday.
  • Tell the volunteer a day ahead if you plan to be gone the next morning and will be unable to call, or leave a voice mail message.
  • If you’re leaving town, give the volunteer an estimate of when you will return.
  • We cannot be responsible if you have no references or if your calls are taken by an answering machine. We must have knowledge of your safety.
