Fred J. Hums Elementary wins This Counts Wellness Challenge

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — Saint Joseph Health System (SJHS), the Health and Wellness Provider of the 40th U.S. Senior Open, congratulates Fred J. Hums Elementary School in Mishawaka, winner of the $5,000 prize in the This Counts Wellness Challenge.

The four-week challenge encouraged students in grades K-5 at participating schools to engage in extracurricular physical activity and record it on a spreadsheet. Any physical activity such as bike riding, golf, soccer, playing with friends or even walking the dog counted. Bonus points were awarded if an adult in the household joined in on the activity. Winners were determined by the highest average minutes of activity per student.

More than 4,700 students at 29 Michiana schools participated in the challenge and logged 2.2 million minutes of physical activity – an average of 15 minutes a day per student.

Fred J. Hums Elementary School can use the $5,000 toward the purchase of sports or exercise equipment. SJHS will make an official presentation to Fred J. Hums Elementary School June 4, 9 am at the school. A total of six winning classes (one in each grade level) also won a This Counts party at Sky Zone Trampoline Park.

The 40th U.S. Senior Open, conducted by the USGA, will be held June 24-30, 2019, at the Warren Course in Notre Dame, Indiana. SJHS will host several medical tents at the Championship, as well as an interactive Wellness Pavillion.
